Wheel-thrown in Thimi
Thimi Pottery
Thimi, between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, is a potters' town. Local black clay is thrown on a heavy hand-spun wheel and fired in open straw kilns, which is what gives the ware its smoky, uneven blacks. Nothing is glazed; the surface is burnished with a stone before firing.
