About this piece
The canvas is stretched, sized with a chalk-and-glue gesso, then burnished with a smooth stone until the surface takes a line cleanly. The drawing follows the iconometric grid — proportions in a thangka are fixed by measurement, not by the painter's preference, which is why a well-executed Tara from any studio has the same underlying geometry.

Colours are stone: malachite for the green, lapis for the blue, cinnabar for the red, all ground by hand and bound in hide glue. Gold work is applied last and burnished with an agate stylus.

The silk brocade mount is traditional and includes the red-and-yellow inner border, the dust curtain and hanging rods. Signed on the reverse by the painter.
How it was made

Hand-painted, brocade-mounted — Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

Painted in Boudha

Made by Tenzin Lama, Boudha.

Care & keeping
Never hang in direct sunlight or above a heat source. Dust the surface with a soft dry brush only — never a damp cloth, as stone pigments in glue binder will lift.

The gold work has to be seen in person. Correspondence before buying was patient and detailed and they sent extra photographs of the brocade unprompted.
